We've Only Got 1 Earth

About 40 years ago, we began designating one day a year to direct our consciousness toward our natural environment. It was important then, and is even more important now, given the toll we've taken on our planet since then. We may think, "I'm just one individual - how much of a difference can I make?", but we know there is strength in numbers. If we all make a commitment to change even a few of our habits, imagine the difference we can make for the longevity of our planet! We've only got one Earth, so let's make it last. Here are 7 changes we can make to our lifestyles to reduce our carbon footprint:

1. Sometimes it takes a bit more effort to rinse out that soup can to place in your blue bag, but when we consider the negative impact landfills on the planet, it's easy to rationalize taking a moment longer to sort your waste.

3. We are so blessed to have several local independent markets in Greater Moncton, like Corn Crib, Dolma Food, and weekly Farmers Markets. Besides supporting your local community, when you buy from these venders, you're supporting much more sustainable production methods than big box brands use.

4. The weather is starting to be nicer (on SOME days - we all know how unpredictable it can be...just another effect of climate change, and another reason to try and be greener. On those nice days, consider going by foot or bike to nearby destinations. Or regardless of the weather, plan ahead and carpool.

5. A lot of the time, being more eco-conscious just comes down to avoiding the temptations of convenience. We can do our part by creating new habits, like always having a re-usable water bottle or coffee thermos on hand.

7. If you like taking long, hot, luxurious showers, you're not the only one. How about treating yourself to ONE longer shower per week, rather than every time. Not only will the planet thank you, but so will your water bill. Maybe you can use that extra time to look in the mirror and give yourself a few nice compliments to start your day!
